Nigeria celebrates her 65th birthday and independence from British colonial rule today, October 1, 2025. A public holiday has been declared by the federal government across the country to mark the occasion.

This historic day marks the lowering of the Union Jack and the raising of the Nigerian flag for the first time in Lagos at midnight on October 1, 1960. Sir Tafawa Balewa became the country’s first Prime Minister and delivered a national address, while Nnamdi Azikiwe was sworn in as the Governor-General.
The celebration is marked by parades, processions, and a presidential address, followed by a national broadcast addressing the nation. The Independence parades have been cancelled this year; other events for the Anniversary will remain in effect, with emphasis that the day should not only be about festivities but also about sober reflection on the sacrifices of past leaders and citizens who fought for the nation’s liberation from colonial rule.
Incognito Blog wishes every Nigerian across the globe a happy Independence Day celebration.
