Greenland is an internal territory of the Kingdom of Denmark that boasts of being the largest island in the world. This island is not a part of the European Economic Area (also known as the EU), however, in 2009 Greenland gained greater autonomy from the Government of Denmark, granting the island control over its police force, coastguard and courts.
Greenland shares a 1.2km border with Canada, on Hans Island, a high arctic region in the Canadian territory of Nunavut. With a population of less than 60,000 residents according to a 2022 census, Greenland is the least densely populated territory in the world.

According to recent reports, the United States of America has expressed strong interests in controlling Greenland. Some claims from members of the current administration point to the fact that taking control over the island would grant the United States of America a more strategic military position against other countries.
Greenland does not have it’s own military, however, as it’s parent Kingdom of Denmark is a member of NATO, the island is under the protection of the NATO military alliance. The tension between Greenland and the USA did not begin in 2026 as the United States of America has made several attempts to buy this territory from Denmark, since the 19th century.
With the current administration of the United States of America firmly pursuing their interest, other NATO allies are starting to deploy military troops to the island. This is to support Greenland and a visible frown on the actions of the United States of America, who is also a founding member of NATO.
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is the military alliance of 32 member states, founded after World War 2 to mutually defend each other in the event of an attack by any outside party. The members of this treaty are Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom, and United States of America.
