Democracy Day 2026

Democracy Day is a national public holiday in Nigeria to commemorate the restoration of democracy in 1999, when power was transferred from the military to an elected civilian government.

Democracy Day was observed on May 29 until 2018 when the government adjusted the date to June 12 to commemorate the democratic election of Moshood Abiola, which was nullified by the then military government. The day features presidential addresses, civic events, and reflections on the state of democracy.

May this Day continue to bring hope, peace, and freedom to Nigeria. Happy Democracy Day.
