Nigeria celebrates her 66th birthday and independence from British colonial rule today, October 1, 2026. A public holiday has been declared by the federal government across the country to mark the occasion.

This historic day marks the lowering of the Union Jack and the raising of the Nigerian flag for the first time in Lagos at midnight on October 1, 1960. Sir Tafawa Balewa became the country’s first Prime Minister and delivered a national address, while Nnamdi Azikiwe was sworn in as the Governor-General.
The celebration is marked with parades, processions and a presidential address and national broadcast addressing the nation. Despite the challenges facing the country’s economy due to insurgency and insecurity in some regions, we hold onto hope for a brighter and more prosperous future for all.
Incognito Blog wishes every Nigerian across the globe a happy Independence Day celebration.
